Café Lucerna

Key details

Where? City Centre | New Town
Type of establishment Tea & Coffee
Budget $$

With an intimate atmosphere and a tasteful Art Deco style interior, Kavárna Lucerna is housed in an arcade of the same name. The space centres around an extensive bar, and the tables are bathed in a warm light from small chandeliers. Large wall mirrors form a backdrop, as do elegant green-gold curtains. Another key element of the design is the fountain with noteworthy floral decoration.

The Lucerna complex has many aspects. The venue is known for its cinema, the oldest permanent venue of its type in Prague. Lucerna also houses the Music Bar, where Yves Montand and Maurice Chevalier sang for audiences, and Joséphine Baker danced for them. Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and many local artists also performed there. For others, Lucerna means a magical place, a gateway to the fascinating world of Prague arcades, and very much a reminder of urban labyrinths. In short, a real paradise for urban explorers. In these little worlds, amidst large buildings dating from the early 20th century, business activities and cultural activities come together.

The café regularly welcomes locals looking for an oasis of peace between important meetings. They make their way from the busy surroundings of the centre of a vibrant capital, full of offices, shops and tourists.

The tables by the windows overlooking the arcade offer an unrivalled view of the cupola, under which hangs a famous sculpture by artist David Černý. Known as Saint Wenceslas, Patron Saint of the Czech Lands, the figure sits astride an – upside down – horse.
