Some cafés and restaurants are such a visual treat that you just don’t know where to look first. Should you gaze up at the ornate Neo-Renaissance ceiling decoration, with rich colours, or feast your eyes on the counter? It groans under the weight of tempting marble cake, golden croissants, and slices of apple strudel.

Such a dilemma confronts you as you enter Café Savoy, straddling the boundary between the Lesser Town and Smíchov. There is probably no more beautiful venue in Prague to enjoy breakfast. This elegant establishment boasts a spacious interior from the days when the Czech capital was one of Europe’s coffee house capitals, and offers an extensive breakfast menu. Items include farmhouse butter, homemade jam, ham, bread from the café bakery, and eggs supplied from a family farm. Try the latter produce in the form of a light omelette or poached egg, or scrambled eggs, served in several ways.

The gourmet menu, available later in the day, merits a look too. Café Savoy is proud of dishes such as rabbit in mustard, snails in wine with truffle polenta, and wild boar with mushrooms, cabbage and Jerusalem artichokes. And the wine list at Café Savoy impresses too.

Want to know a secret?

As well as the spacious dining area, the café has a well-stocked bakery counter, with products to take away. The marble cake and apple strudel are legendary. Or, you can treat yourself to a slice of excellent Sachertorte or last, but by no means least, excellent wheat rye bread.
