Národní kavárna

Key details

Where? City Centre | Old Town
Type of establishment Tea & Coffee | Restaurant
Cuisine International
Budget $$ | $$$

This establishment (National Café), located on Národní třída, near the National Theatre, helped shape the Czech nation. A witness to the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, the Národní kavárna opened its doors in 1896.

Bordeaux upholstery, in the Chesterfield style much favoured during the First Republic, marble tables, Thonet chairs, and crystal chandeliers. Period photographs of writers, philosophers, politicians and other personalities, and copies of newspapers from better times… almost like the old days. There is just one thing missing – somehow a lack of intellectual buzz. Why? Is it because of high prices?

Národní Kavárna is a coffee shop in name only; for most of its existence, it has also been a restaurant with quite a diverse menu. What gives this place more of a café ambience is the extensive drinks menu and the homemade desserts on offer. So, if you fancy a little taste of the First Republic, do stop by. An entirely authentic experience can’t be guaranteed because you can’t step twice in the same river. But for those of us unfortunate enough not to have lived in that era, a glimpse of another age can be a refreshing experience.

Want to know a secret?

If you have a sweet tooth, why not choose from a selection of gateaux with grand names or opt for traditional Czech fare – such as semolina, dumplings with curd cheese, or the local version of pancakes.
