Come and discover the splendor of medieval art in Bohemia, of which the 14th century was the brilliant golden age. Emperor Charles IV and the entire Luxembourg dynasty were passionate patrons of the arts, who attracted a host of artists – painters, sculptors, goldsmiths – to Prague and made Bohemia a major artistic center in Europe.
Accompanied by an art historian, you will get to know the main artists active at that time: the anonymous master of the Vyšší Brod cycle, with its astonishing iconographic and symbolic richness; the master Theodoric, whose portraits genially embody the theological and political vision of the emperor; and finally the master of Třeboň, whose works are bathed in an unprecedented mysticism and lyricism. You will fall under the spell of the sculpted or painted Virgins, devotional images flourishing everywhere then. Finally, you will explore the Bohemian art of the 15th and 16th centuries, after the cataclysm of the Hussite wars that ravaged the country.
You will also enjoy the site of the Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia, the oldest Gothic building in Prague, which offers its intimate atmosphere to the presentation of this first-class collection.
