Ball Games Court

Key details

Where? Hradčany

The Ball Games Court was built in the 16th century on the southern side of the Royal Gardens, directly above the Deer Moat (Jelení příkop). It was the third such structure at Prague Castle used for the most popular ball games of the time. The High Renaissance building is decorated with beautiful sgraffito, and the main facade features representations of the four elements and the liberal arts.

Today, the Ball Games Court serves mainly for exhibitions, concerts and social events and therefore is open only during exhibitions or concerts.

In the 1950s, a hammer and sickle, representing the communist five-year plan, as an allegory of industry and agriculture, was added to the facade. Curiously, this is the only preserved element of Socialist Realism at Prague Castle.
