Exhibition Hall at the Municipal Library

Key details

Where? Old Town

The second floor of the Municipal Library forms part of the City of Prague Gallery, which manages seven exhibition venues, and acquired the extensive library space premises in 1992.

Reconstruction of the exhibition area included an original design for the Gallery main entrance, developed by architect Vlado Milunić, who co-designed the famous Dancing House in Prague. The Gallery focuses on leading contemporary Czech and international artists, with a wide range of paintings, sculpture, photography, video art and street art.

In recent years, the gallery has presented leading names including English sculptor Richard Deacon, and Czech artists Jan Merta, Krištof Kintera, Petr Nikl and Milena Dopitová. Noteworthy projects include The City of Obsessions, a street art and graffiti exhibition, and The Brussels Dream exhibition. It showcased Czechoslovakia at the World Expo 58 in Brussels and lifestyles in the first half of the 1960s.

Want to know a secret?

The Gallery main entrance is located in Valentinská street. However, if you enter the building from Mariánské Square, you’ll encounter a remarkable work of art called Idiom – a large cylinder made of books, in the library vestibule. Do have a look through the hole inside!
